Moving to Germany is a fresh start, and a few administrative tasks matter a great deal in the first weeks. In this article we review the most important points.
Registering your address (Anmeldung)
After moving you must register your address at the citizens’ office (Bürgeramt) within about two weeks. For this you usually need your passport and the landlord’s confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung).
Health insurance
Having health insurance is mandatory in Germany. Depending on your work or study situation, you can choose statutory (gesetzlich) or private (privat) insurance.
Bank account and tax ID
You need a bank account to receive your salary and pay rent. The tax identification number (Steuer-ID) is usually sent to you by post after the Anmeldung.
