Summary: a valid passport is essential for a residence card, its renewal, travel and many administrative tasks in Germany. An Iranian passport is usually renewed or issued through Iran’s diplomatic and consular missions abroad, but the status and procedures of these missions in Germany may have changed. Before acting, be sure to ask official sources (the embassy website and the consular services system of Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs) about the current procedure and the availability of each branch.
Why is a valid passport important?
- You need a valid passport to be issued or to renew a residence card (eAT).
- Travelling abroad or returning with an expired passport, or one with less than six months’ validity, can cause problems.
- Banks, employers and authorities sometimes require a valid passport.
- Applications for citizenship, permanent residence and even family reunification are usually done with identity verification through the passport.
When should you renew?
It is recommended to act at least 6 to 12 months before expiry; issuance can take a long time, and the renewal of the residence card must begin before it expires. If your passport is close to expiry and you want to renew your residence card, the Foreigners’ Authority usually limits the residence period to the passport’s validity.
Usual documents
Get the exact list from the mission; the following documents are usually required:
- Previous passport (original and copy), or proof of loss if lost
- Birth certificate and national ID card (original and copy)
- Photo meeting the mission’s standard
- Proof of residence in Germany (residence card or visa) and the registration certificate (Meldebescheinigung)
- Application form and receipt for payment of the fee
- For men: a certificate or document on military service status (if required)
- For children: the original birth certificate, the parents’ attendance and the parents’ consent
General steps
- Information: check the official website of the Iranian embassy in Berlin and, if active, the consulates. Some commercial sources claim the consulates have “closed” and others do not; trust only the official notice.
- Booking an appointment: usually an appointment is made via a system or email.
- Attending in person and presenting the documents; fingerprints and a photo may also be taken on site.
- Paying the fee according to the current tariff.
- Receiving the passport in person or by post, depending on the procedure.
If the passport is lost or stolen
- Report it to the German police and get a copy of the report.
- Inform the Iranian mission and apply for a new passport or a temporary travel document.
- Inform the Foreigners’ Authority; the residence document (eAT) is separate from the passport but is needed for identification.
If renewing the passport from the Iranian mission is not possible
The missions may be temporarily closed or limited. In that case:
- Talk to the Foreigners’ Authority; in some cases they can issue a substitute document (such as an Ausweisersatz or Reiseausweis für Ausländer) for people who cannot “reasonably” obtain a passport. The conditions are strict and you must prove that you have made an effort.
- Avoid unknown middlemen offering a “fast passport”.
- Get help from immigration counselling or a lawyer.
Travelling with a short-validity passport
Many countries (and airlines) do not accept a passport with less than 6 months’ validity. Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also has a notice about travelling with a passport valid for less than six months or an expired one; read it before travelling.
Additional tips
- When sending documents by post, use registered, trackable mail.
- Keep digital copies of official documents.
- After receiving the new passport, report it to the Foreigners’ Authority so that the new number is recorded in your file. Residence extension guide.
Frequently asked questions
What if my passport expires but I have a residence card?
The residence card is valid until its expiry, but without a valid passport you cannot travel outside Germany and renewing your residence becomes difficult. Renew the passport as soon as possible.
Do I have to return to Iran to renew?
No; the main authorities are Iran’s missions abroad, unless an official notice says otherwise.
Note: this guide is general information (last reviewed: October 2026) and is not legal or immigration advice. Laws, amounts and procedures of embassies and authorities change constantly, especially for Iranians. Before any step, read the official notice of the relevant body and, for complex cases, consult a lawyer or authorised immigration advisor.
