Work migration to Germany: routes and first steps
To migrate to Germany for work, you first need to find the route that fits your qualification, experience and job offer. Finding a listing, receiving a job offer and obtaining a residence and work permit are different stages. This guide is a starting point for assessing a route and does not determine the conditions of your personal case.

Where do we start?
Before paying any fees or extensively preparing documents, write down the answers to these questions: What qualification and experience do you have? What is your target job? Do you have a specific job offer? Does your profession require a licence to practise? Are you currently inside or outside Germany? With this information you can check the suitable route on the official portal.
Work visa for skilled workers
According to the official Make it in Germany portal, this route is for people with a university degree or qualified vocational training. Usually the recognition or comparability of the qualification and an offer for a qualifying job must be checked. Helper jobs alone are not enough for this route. For regulated professions, the professional licence also matters. Read the details and exceptions on the official skilled worker visa page.
EU Blue Card
The Blue Card is one of the routes for skilled employment and depends on the qualification requirements, a job offer and a minimum salary. Conditions and exceptions for some groups differ; the minimum salary also depends on the year of application. Before reviewing a contract, check the current figure and the conditions for your profession in the official Blue Card guide. Having any job offer does not mean you qualify for the Blue Card.
Opportunity Card for job searching
If you do not yet have a specific job offer, the Opportunity Card can be one of the options to consider. The official portal explains two general routes, based on a recognised qualification or a points system, and the requirement to cover your living costs. Having an Opportunity Card is not required to search for work from outside Germany; you can also send job applications from where you live. Check the exact conditions on the official Opportunity Card page.
Preparing documents: build a tidy folder
Sort your CV, work records, education and professional documents, correspondence with employers and language documents. These are not a definitive visa document list; the official list for the route and the handling mission is what counts. Before costly translation or certification, check the document type and the requirements of that authority.
How do we assess a job offer?
- Check the company’s legal name and its means of contact.
- Clarify the job title, place of work, hours, pay and start date with the employer.
- Ask whether the employer accepts applications from outside Germany and, if needed, what administrative cooperation they provide.
- Distinguish between a service fee, an employer’s commitment and a promise of employment; read the text of the commitments before paying.
Frequently asked questions
Do I definitely need a job offer for work migration?
It depends on the route chosen. Some routes are based on a job offer and some are designed for job searching. Compare the official list of routes with your own conditions.
How much does work migration cost and how long does it take?
Without knowing the route, documents and the handling authority, no fixed figure can be relied on. Collect the costs of translation, assessment, application and living expenses separately from the relevant sources; ask the handling authority for the approximate time.
Do Hamsaye listings guarantee a visa?
No. The employer’s administrative support must be clear and confirmed for the position in question; the residence and visa decision is in the hands of the responsible authorities.
