Describing symptoms in a foreign language is not always easy. Fortunately, in most big German cities there are Iranian or Persian-speaking doctors and dentists. In this guide we go through the steps of finding a doctor and getting an appointment.
The family doctor (Hausarzt) is the first step
In Germany you usually first visit a general practitioner or family doctor (Hausarzt). If needed, they refer you to a specialist with a referral (Überweisung). Having a regular family doctor keeps your medical records in one place.
How do I get an appointment?
- Phone call to the practice: the most common method. It is best to call early in the morning.
- Online booking: many practices use systems such as Doctolib.
- Number 116117: the patient service (Patientenservice) helps outside practice hours and also guides you in finding specialist appointments.
- Emergency: in dangerous and urgent cases call 112.
What should I bring?
- Health insurance card (eGK)
- Referral, if you got one from another doctor
- List of the medications you take and previous medical records (translated, if possible)
