To make ghormeh sabzi, tahdig or ash reshteh you need ingredients that are not always available in ordinary German shops. The good news is that Iranian supermarkets operate in most big German cities.
The most popular Iranian items
- Iranian rice and saffron: pay attention to the packaging, the date and the authenticity of the saffron.
- Dried and frozen herbs: ghormeh herbs, ash herbs and polo herbs.
- Pulses and seasonings: dried limes (limoo amani), kashk, pomegranate paste, sumac, barberries.
- Bread: fresh sangak, barbari and lavash in some shops and bakeries.
- Snacks and sweets: gaz, sohan, nuts and traditional sweets, especially around Nowruz and Yalda.
Where to shop?
- Iranian supermarkets: they have the widest selection. See their list in the Iranian supermarket section.
- Turkish and Arab shops: a good option for pulses, spices and fresh vegetables.
- Iranian bakeries and patisseries: in the Bakery and confectionery section.
- Online shopping: many shops deliver throughout Germany.
Shopping tips
- Compare prices between several shops; the price difference for saffron and rice is considerable.
- For occasions such as Nowruz, shop early so you do not run into shortages.
- Check German labels such as Mindestens haltbar bis (best-before date).
And if you do not feel like cooking, drop by the Iranian restaurants near you!
