Birth certificates, marriage certificates, educational qualifications and driving licences are among the documents that Iranians in Germany usually need translated. German authorities accept only translations made by an official (sworn) translator.
Who is an official translator in Germany?
In Germany an official translator is called, depending on the state, vereidigter, beeidigter or ermächtigter Übersetzer. These translators are approved by the state courts and certify the translation with a stamp and signature.
- The translation must be made from the original document or a certified copy.
- The translation of an official translator is usually accepted in all states.
- Before ordering, ask the relevant authority exactly which documents are needed and in what form.
See the list of official Persian–German translators in the Official translation section of our directory.
Recognition of qualifications (Anerkennung)
For some professions (such as medicine, nursing, teaching or engineering) and sometimes to continue studying, your Iranian qualification must be evaluated and recognised in Germany.
- On the official portal Anerkennung in Deutschland, find the authority responsible for your profession.
- For university qualifications, you can usually request a “certificate evaluation” (Zeugnisbewertung) from the Central Office for Foreign Education (ZAB).
- Prepare translated documents, transcripts and, if needed, work records.
- In some cases, authentication of the documents through official bodies is required.
Important points
- Make several certified copies of your original documents.
- Processing a recognition application can take several months; start early.
- For complex residence or legal matters, get help from immigration and legal advisers.
