If you came to Germany with an Iranian driver’s licence, you should know that it is valid only for a limited time after you register your residence. In this guide we go through the steps for converting it to a German licence (Führerschein).
How long is an Iranian licence valid?
Licences from countries outside the European Union are usually valid for 6 months after you register your residence in Germany. After that you need a German licence to drive. In some cases a short-term extension is possible; ask the driving licence office of your city (Führerscheinstelle).
Steps for the conversion
- Enrol at a driving school: to take the tests you must apply through a driving school (Fahrschule).
- Gather documents: usually the original licence and its official translation, ID card or passport, a biometric photo, a vision test certificate (Sehtest) and a first-aid course certificate (Erste-Hilfe-Kurs).
- Submit the application at the driving licence office.
- Theory test: for an Iranian licence, both the theory and the practical test are usually required. Besides German, the theory test is offered in several other languages; ask your driving school which are available.
- Practical test: even if you have driven for years, a few lessons with an instructor to get used to the rules and driving habits in Germany are strongly recommended.
Persian-speaking driving schools
Learning the German traffic rules in your mother tongue makes everything much easier. See the list of driving schools with Persian-speaking instructors in our guide. For the official translation of your licence, also visit the official translation section.
