Summary: the Jobcenter provides both career counselling and financial support to people able to work whose income is not enough to live on. Until 2025 this support was “Bürgergeld”, and according to reports it has been replaced from July 2026 by “Grundsicherung” (a new name). Amounts and details of the law may change; ask your local Jobcenter before acting.
Who is this support for?
For people aged 15 to retirement age who are able to work, live in Germany and whose income or assets are not enough to support themselves. Your type of residence matters; not all residence-permit holders are entitled. Depending on the type of Aufenthaltstitel and the start of your stay in Germany, access may be limited, so get advice before applying.
What is paid?
- A monthly amount for living costs (Regelbedarf)
- “Reasonable” rent and heating costs (Kosten der Unterkunft)
- Health and long-term care insurance
- Additional benefits for children, such as the education and participation package (Bildung und Teilhabe)
Common documents
- ID and residence permit, registration certificate
- Rental contract and the latest additional-cost statements
- Bank statements for the last 3 months and proof of assets
- Employment contract or payslips (if any) and insurance documents
Application steps
- Go to the Jobcenter in your place of residence or submit the application online. The date of application matters, because support is calculated from that time.
- Complete the forms and documents; you can get help from a trusted person or a counselling centre.
- Attend the appointment with the advisor (Fallmanager) and draw up the integration plan into work.
Duties of the recipient
The recipient must cooperate in the effort to find work: attending appointments, applying for suggested jobs and sometimes taking part in a language or training course. Failing to meet obligations without good reason may reduce the support. Report changes of income or address to the Jobcenter quickly.
Language and integration
For immigrants, integration and German courses (Integrationskurs) and career counselling are provided through the Jobcenter or the immigration office. These courses play an important role in finding work.
Frequently asked questions
Does receiving support harm my residence status?
For some types of residence, receiving social benefits can affect renewal or permanent residence. Ask the immigration office or an immigration advisor before applying.
What if I marry or my income changes?
The income and assets of a spouse or household members are also taken into account; report every change.
